It's Now Or Never 1:55:57 Champion Jack Dupree was more than a blues pianist—he was a storyteller, a showman, and one of the last true characters of the genre. Born in New Orleans in 1910, he learned piano in an orphanage after losing his parents in a fire. Early influences like “Drive ’em Down” and Leroy Carr shaped his distinctive barrelhouse style, deeply rooted in New Orleans rhythm and blues. After years of hard living, recording, and even time as a World War II POW, Dupree eventually found a home in Europe, settling in Germany by the late 1970s. The Rockpalast concert is a vivid portrait of his artistry. Accompanied by Danish guitarist Kenn Lending, Dupree delivers everything he was known for—rollicking boogie-woogie, emotionally raw slow blues, and his signature blend of humor and soul. His personality radiates through every note and story, even jokingly asking for another beer in the TV studio before the show continued. By the time of this recording, Dupree had become a beloved figure in the German blues scene, playing everywhere from clubs to festivals. This performance not only highlights his musical prowess but also his enduring spirit—a living link to the roots of American blues, thriving far from home but never far from his origins.
