The great English Folk Singer Jez Lowes gave us this short but poignant ballad; the heartbreak of losing one's livelihood and at the same time feeling relief at not having to return to one of mankind's most crushing occupations. Both my grandfathers worked in the mines of North Eastern Pennsylvania. My paternal grandfather, Harry Ellis Williams started at age 14 and left at 18 for World War One. My maternal grandfather, John Herstek immigrated from Czechoslovakia at age 17 and went directly into the mines. He left the mines a few years later when his thumb was crushed by machinery. He was not compensated. My cover of the song is just a shadow of the original as performed by Jez Lowe. Look him up...he is, in my view, among the greatest living Folk Singers!

John Gerard "Jez" Lowe is an English folk singer-songwriter. Lowe was born and raised in County Durham, in a family with Irish roots. He is known primarily for his compositions dealing with daily life in North-East England, particularly in his hometown of Easington Colliery.
