The Backseat Lovers - Know Your Name. An exclusive live performance for Vevo. Celebrating local heroes can sometimes yield an enviable payoff. The Backseat Lovers had a sweet career liftoff when they dropped their 2019 ode to alt-rock superfans, "Kilby Girl." The Utah outfit were regional celebs around their native stomping grounds of Salt Lake City and vicinity, but creating a portrait of a deeply hip, deeply dedicated music lover who frequents the coolest area club, Kilby Court, a hub for left-of-the-dial music in greater SLC, blasted them to a wider audience. "I overheard she was 19/ She’s got a fake ID and a nose ring/Those kinds of girls tend to know things better than I do," sings Joshua Harmon on the band's 'When We Were Friends' debut. The homage clicked. Here at the end of 2022 the track is closing in on 200,000 Spotify streams. "Kilby Girl" opened the door, but the Lovers have plenty of strong songs. The dreamy groove of "Pool House," the feisty kinetics of "Maple Syrup" - no wonder they were invited to Lolla last year, and no wonder Capitol Records came a-callin’. As good as their albums are, it seems like the Lovers - rounded out by guitarist Jonas Swanson, drummer Juice Welch and bassist KJ Ward - are an act you want to see onstage. When they hit Brooklyn to scald through a couple tunes from their new 'Waiting To Spill' album, they were on fire. NME says the record has a "grander" sound than previous efforts. We agree.
