Performed solo by Glen Phillips during a StageIT broadcast on June 6th, 2021, this intimate rendition of “Begin” offers a rare live look at a deeply reflective song from the Toad the Wet Sprocket catalog. “Begin” originally appeared on the band’s 1994 album Dulcinea, an album that helped solidify Toad’s reputation for thoughtful songwriting. Although Dulcinea features several fan favorites that continue to be played at Toad shows, “Begin” was almost never performed live by the band — it is rumored to have been played only once. Glen Phillips has revisited the track in his solo performances on occasion, making this 2021 StageIT rendition one of the few available live versions. Stripped down to voice and guitar, this performance highlights the song’s lyrical intimacy and emotional nuance. It is also noteworthy for Phillips’s introductory explanation of the song’s origins, providing additional context and insight into its creation.
