The Stooges were known for their chaotic live shows, but their final two performances in 1974 took things to an entirely new level. Playing to a crowd packed with members of the notorious Scorpions biker gang in Michigan, Iggy Pop spent the night provoking them—until he was knocked out cold with a single punch. What happened next is the stuff of rock legend. Either Iggy went on the radio and challenged the gang to their next show, or the Scorpions called in, threatening to kill the band if they dared to play. That fateful gig, immortalized on the bootleg album Metallic KO, was one of the most dangerous concerts ever recorded—filled with bottles smashing against guitars and an audience hurling anything they could at the stage. As legendary rock critic Lester Bangs put it: 🗣️ “Nobody got killed, but it’s the only live album I know where you can actually hear beer bottles breaking against guitar strings.” The night ended with Iggy Pop daring the audience to throw whatever they had left at the band before walking off stage—marking the end of The Stooges until their reunion 30 years later.
