JOE'S MEMORIES:
I had been a fan of the band since 1968 when they appeared on the Lloyd Thaxton Show, an "American Idol"
type talent competition series that was on NBC-TV during the Summer. They won the viewer vote week after week
and eventually won the top prize. Their peak came when the "Woodstock" movie was released in the Summer of 1970
and people all over the world got to see how great they were. Originally, Sly and the Family Stone had scheduled
afternoon and evening performances for this date, but the afternoon show was canceled, for unknown reasons.
A local band, called Twelve 76, opened the show, and a selection from their set is included on this recording.
The Detroit band Rare Earth had a hit with a cover of the Temptations' "Get Ready" that had steady airplay,
so when Twelve 76 announced that they were doing it, I decided to record it. After their set, we were ready for
a Woodstock-style performance from Sly and the Family Stone. We waited and waited and waited some more, but no Sly.
Now, we start remembering the recent stories about Sly being late, or not showing up at all. It got to be 45 minutes,
then an hour and no Sly. Finally, after an hour and 15-minute wait, Sly and the band come onstage, without an introduction, and spend the next 7 minutes tuning up, while Sly speaks a little with the audience. He seemed a bit "out of it",
so we didn't know quite what to expect. We were not disappointed! As soon as the music started,
it was like a switch had been flipped and Sly and the band came to life, turning in a performance that I still consider one of the ten best shows I've ever seen.
It was a setlist of "Greatest Hits" that ended with an unbelievable "Dance To The Music/Music Lover/Higher" medley that was equal in energy to the Woodstock performance.
The encore of "Hot Fun In The Summertime/ "(I Want To Take You)Higher" brought the evening to a close and sent everyone home happy.
