Faixas: 1. Vacation Brain 2. Boys Don't Mind Noise Medusa Seven (1989, Hoss).

About This Footage

In the sweltering summer of 1989, Shudder to Think was on the cusp of something big. Their early work had been a staple of the Washington D.C. post-hardcore scene, but with their debut single "Medusa Seven" they were poised to break free from the confines of the underground and take on the mainstream.

The footage in question is the full 7:58 minutes of the "Medusa Seven" single, released that same year. It's a rare and significant document of the band's early sound, which was already beginning to blend post-hardcore with art rock and power pop influences. Craig Wedren's theatrical vocals and the band's dynamic energy are on full display here.

At this point in their career, Shudder to Think was still riding high on the success of their debut album "Get Your Goat", released just a year prior. The single "Medusa Seven" would be one of their last releases on Dischord Records before they made the bold move to Epic Records. This decision would prove to be a double-edged sword, as while it brought them critical acclaim and moderate commercial success with songs like "X-French Tee Shirt", it also alienated some fans who felt they had sold out.

The music itself is a frenetic mix of driving rhythms and angular guitar work, with Wedren's vocals soaring above the fray. It's a sound that would influence a generation of bands to come, but at the time was still raw and unpolished. The "Medusa Seven" single is a testament to Shudder to Think's innovative spirit and willingness to take risks.

Watching this footage today, it's clear that Shudder to Think was always destined for greatness. Despite the ups and downs of their career, including Wedren's battle with Hodgkin's disease, they continued to push boundaries and experiment with new sounds. Their eventual reunion in 2007 marked a triumphant return to form, and while they may not have achieved mainstream success, they remain one of the most beloved and respected bands to emerge from the D.C. scene.

For fans of post-hardcore and art rock, "Medusa Seven" is a must-see. It's a glimpse into the early days of Shudder to Think, when they were still finding their footing but already showing signs of greatness. The footage is raw and unpolished, but it's also exhilarating and infectious. Watching Craig Wedren's antics on stage, it's clear that this band was always meant to be something special.

The "Medusa Seven" single may not have been a commercial success at the time, but its influence can still be felt today. It's a testament to Shudder to Think's innovative spirit and willingness to take risks, even when it meant going against the grain. For those who appreciate true artistry and musicianship, this footage is a must-see.
