Booker T. & the M.G.'s were more than just an instrumental group—they were the heartbeat of Stax Records and the racially integrated soul that changed the world. From the iconic groove of "Green Onions" to backing legends like Otis Redding and Sam & Dave, their influence is immeasurable. As of 2026, the music world continues to mourn as we look back at the lives, careers, and final days of the members who have passed. In this deep dive, we pay tribute to the "Architects of Soul," including the recent 2025 passing of the legendary Steve Cropper. We explore the tragic loss of Al Jackson Jr., the peaceful passing of Donald "Duck" Dunn, and the legacy of the original bassist Lewie Steinberg. 🕊️ The Legends We Honor: Steve Cropper (Guitar, 1941–2025): We honor the "Colonel," who co-wrote "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" and "In the Midnight Hour." We look back at his final years and his 2025 passing in Nashville at age 84. Al Jackson Jr. (Drums, 1935–1975): The "Human Timekeeper." We revisit the tragic and unsolved circumstances of his murder in Memphis, which cut short one of the greatest drumming careers in history. Donald "Duck" Dunn (Bass, 1941–2012): The soul of the rhythm section. We remember his incredible work with The Blues Brothers and his passing in 2012 while on tour in Tokyo. Lewie Steinberg (Original Bass, 1933–2016): The man who played on the original "Green Onions." We detail his foundational role in the band and his passing in 2016. 🌟 Join the Community: If "Green Onions" is one of your favorite tracks, please SUBSCRIBE for more deep dives into the pioneers of Soul, Funk, and Rock royalty.
