Savatage is an American heavy metal band formed in 1979 by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in Florida. Originally named Avatar, they changed to Savatage before releasing their debut album Sirens (1983). They became influential in U.S. metal, known for their evolution from power metal to progressive and symphonic styles. Their partnership with producer Paul O'Neill began with Hall of the Mountain King (1987), leading to critically acclaimed albums like Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991), and Edge of Thorns (1993). The band was gaining momentum when Criss Oliva tragically died in a car accident in 1993. Despite this loss, the band continued with Jon Oliva and new vocalist Zak Stevens. Savatage released four more albums before going on hiatus in 2002. Members pursued other projects, most notably Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They reunited briefly for a 2015 performance and confirmed new material is in progress as of 2023, with a new album, Curtain Call, expected in 2026.
