Tribute to DJ Simon Carter - Breakbeat, Hip-Hop & More: Mixed by Arash Torabi
Parental AdvisoryExplicit ContentTo mark 10 years since the passing of our dear friend and brother, Simon Carter, I've put together a DJ mix on vinyl, playing some of the records that I used to play when we both DJ'd together in Brighton during the mid to late '90s. Simon was a beautiful man, he was kind-hearted, good-natured, gentle, funny and a joy to be around. It's impossible to picture him now without seeing his infectious smile, always easy-going and I honestly can't remember a single time when he ever raised his voice. Simon was also a very gifted DJ and illustrator.... I had so many laughs with him and great conversations about music and new records to obsess over... Simon's mixing was beat-perfect, unlike mine which is messy and all over the gaff! Therefore this little tribute isn't really worthy of his name. There are a few classic tracks that both of us liked, and I've attempted to do a "cover version" of one of his mixes, going from Almighty Beatfreaks to the Ragga Twins. He was a genius at beat-matching a-cappellas to instrumental tracks and matching unusual tracks that nobody could imagine working well togther. And all LIVE usinng Technics decks and vinyl ONLY: no b******t laptop tricks. Like a human mash-up machine! Simon had a deep passion for music and a great knowledge of it. Like myself, he was into buying a lot of different styles of music: we were both "indie" types, who got into dance, then sidetracked by hip-hop, R&B and lost in da jungle! We miss you, Brother Simon. You were taken from us way too soon. Every DJ set I play is dedicated to your memory and I wish you could be there with me, mixing in your genius style and making me look a right divvie in comparisson! One Love, Brother! X
