A firefighter and a paramedic, Billy joined the Sacramento Fire Department in 2004. He was dedicated and passionate about fire service. Billy enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and colleagues. He loved his Boxer dogs, Max and Ember. A lover of tattoos, he carried his stories with him at all times. Born in Yuba City, he graduated from Live Oak High School in 1991. Soon after, Billy pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. He started off as a volunteer and was later hired by Sutter County Fire, Yuba City Fire and Sacramento Fire. After serving as a first responder for more than 20 years, he was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and took his own life on February 14, 2016. Billy was 43 years old. Gone too soon, but never forgotten. The Sacramento Fire Department continues its commitment to helping and supporting all members. The Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) is dedicated to serving SFD members and it continues to grow and evolve. Currently, the Sacramento Fire’s BHU has several licensed therapists and more than 60 peer-support members who are highly trained to help others. Most recently, the Behavioral Health Unit added two peer support canines.
