Coverdale & Page – Japan Tour Compilation December - 1993. The Band : David Coverdale - Lead Vocals Jimmy Page - Guitar Guy Pratt - Bass Denny Carmassi - Drums Brett Tuggle - Keyboards Coverdale-Page was short-lived (1991–1993) due to poor ticket sales in the US, disagreements over venue sizes, and the rise of grunge, which overshadowed their classic rock style. The collaboration ended after a brief Japanese tour when Jimmy Page reunited with Robert Plant, following Plant's open criticism of the project. The COVERDALE/PAGE tour, realized exclusively in Japan worldwide. We present a digest collection of masterful footage from this one-of-a-kind tour. This release contains three concerts, soundcheck, and rehearsal footage. While COVERDALE/PAGE footage alone is rare, this collection features approximately two hours of 8mm video recordings captured by those involved. Let's examine each in detail. The Tracklist : -【Studio Rehearsal】 1.Feeling Hot 2.In My Time Of Dying First up are two studio rehearsal tracks of unknown date. “Wanton Song / Feeling Hot” is an instrumental that ends quickly, but the real treat is “In My Time Of Dying.” This features a full performance including Coverdale. Just having a studio take of Coverdale singing a ZEP song is incredible, but seeing footage of the two legends facing each other, playing with sheet music (lyrics?) between them... it's an incredibly luxurious sight. -【December 15, 1993: Nippon Budokan】 3.Sound Check 4.Rock And Roll 5.Take Me For A Little While 6.White Summer / Black Mountain Side 7.Don't Leave Me This Way 8.Shake My Tree Next is the second day at Nippon Budokan. This includes the soundcheck and five live songs. The live footage is fantastic, but the real treasure is the soundcheck. Filmed by staff from the audience seats, it shows Page on stage, checking the sound with a jam and the “The Ocean / Wanton Song / Feeling Hot” medley. You can hear vocals on “Feeling Hot,” but the focus stays on Page. The stage set, hard to make out in the live shots, is clearly visible here, and you can perfectly see the dazzling lights from the massive light towers. -【December 21, 1993: Osaka-jo Hall】 9.Absolution Blues 10.Slide It In 11.Take A Look At Yourself 12.Take Me For A Little While 13.In My Time Of Dying 14.Here I Go Again 15.White Summer / Black Mountain Side The third is the second day of the Osaka shows late in the tour. This features seven songs from the actual live performance, filmed by someone from the production crew from beside Denny Carmassi's drum kit (the same as the Nippon Budokan footage above). It's essentially a pro-shot drum angle perspective, so while the two main performers are seen from behind, the distance is extremely close. Honestly, it's not the best footage for recalling the live experience, but conversely, it lets you immerse yourself in the feeling of being part of the project. In fact, the staff back then must have been thrilled just to be on site with the legendary duo, which is probably why they wanted to capture even their backs. Scenes like the zoom-in on them leaning shoulders together make you empathize with the cameraman's feelings. -【December 22, 1993: Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium】 16.Sound Checks 17.Absolution Blues 18.Slide It In 19.Rock And Roll 20.Over Now 21.Kashmir 22.Pride And Joy The final footage is from the final day's Nagoya show. It includes the soundcheck for “Whole Lotta Love” and six songs from the actual live performance. Interestingly, the actual show that day featured an arrangement where “Whole Lotta Love” was inserted midway through “Shake My Tree,” so this might have been practice for that. Unlike the Nippon Budokan footage, the soundcheck here was filmed from the stage itself, showing a practiced feel befitting the final day. But the singer performing here is...?? The live footage, meanwhile, comes from a fixed camera positioned for venue setup. While slightly distant, it captures the entire stage front-on, offering a much clearer view of the show compared to the footage from Nippon Budokan or Osaka Castle. Furthermore, while previous live shots were essentially highlights from various parts of the show, this Nagoya footage captures the entire opening sequence from “Absolution Blues” onwards. It's a shame the pivotal “Shake My Tree” is missing, but it allows you to thoroughly enjoy the final night of this legendary project, which consumed years of effort from both titans. Rare behind-the-scenes footage is already noteworthy, but when the protagonists are COVERDALE/PAGE, it becomes even more special. This is a must-see for anyone curious about the “behind-the-scenes” of this luxurious supergroup collaboration. It reveals a different, more authentic side of COVERDALE/PAGE than the concert itself. A masterpiece collection where even the staff's joy shines through.
