Years later, Dave recalled the surreal moment he first heard You Oughta Know on the radio while driving through Detroit. “I’m listening to the lyrics going… ‘Oh no. Oh, I can’t be this guy.’” The realization hit hard — especially when he recognized references only the two of them would understand, like their inside joke about a “dead fish handshake.” Moved and maybe a little rattled, Dave bought the CD and listened to the whole album alone in his car, piecing together how much of their relationship might have made it into the music. “I think I may have really hurt this woman,” he admitted.
