But what many fans didn’t know at the time was that the song may have been inspired by her former boyfriend: Full House actor Dave Coulier. A few years before Alanis became a household name, she and Coulier dated. At the time, she was just 18 and he was 33. The relationship lasted about two years before ending in 1994 — shortly before Jagged Little Pill was released. Years later, Dave recalled the surreal moment he first heard You Oughta Know on the radio while driving through Detroit. “I’m listening to the lyrics going… ‘Oh no. Oh, I can’t be this guy.’” The realization hit hard — especially when he recognized references only the two of them would understand, like their inside joke about a “dead fish handshake.” Moved and maybe a little rattled, Dave bought the CD and listened to the whole album alone in his car, piecing together how much of their relationship might have made it into the music. “I think I may have really hurt this woman,” he admitted. Despite the song’s raw emotion, there’s no bad blood between them. Dave shared a touching story that perfectly captures Alanis’s character. When his sister Sharon was dying of cancer, Alanis — then living in Toronto — drove to Detroit with her guitar and sat at Sharon’s bedside, playing and singing to comfort her in her final days. “She couldn’t be any sweeter,” Dave said. “I’ve never had anything bad to say about her. She’s lovely.” Turns out, behind the iconic angst of You Oughta Know is a story not just of heartbreak, but also of compassion, growth, and enduring respect. http://didyoucatchthis.com https://www.tiktok.com/@didyoucatchthis https://www.facebook.com/didyoucatchthis https://www.instagram.com/didyoucatchthistv https://www.snapchat.com/add/diducatchthis The Real Story Behind Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” and Her Relationship with Dave Coulier https://youtube.com/shorts/DJ_MkT94Uqs #shorts
