A portrait of Sonny Boy Williamson I. He was the first player to bring the harmonica out as a lead instrument. Prior to him it had been used mainly for rhythm and color. A few of his songs, like Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, Sugar Mama Blues, and Susie-Q, have been covered by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and others. All the great players who came after him borrowed from his style. Immensely popular during his time, he met with a tragic end.

John Lee Curtis "Sonny Boy" Williamson was an American blues harmonica player and singer-songwriter. He is often regarded as the pioneer of the blues harp as a solo instrument. He played on hundreds of recordings by many pre–World War II blues artists. Under his own name, he was one of the most recorded blues musicians of the 1930s and 1940s and is closely associated with Chicago producer Lester Melrose and Bluebird Records.
