This is for the 100 questions I get a day. "Why aren't you in a band?" This is from a gig in 2012 at The Rusty Gull. I played there many years up until the place was sold in 2018. Bob was the owner, and it was one of the last small venues left in Vancouver. Most music clubs started closing around 2015, due to apathy for live music, harsh liquor laws, condo redevelopment, hotel closures, high rent, etc.
Bryan Adams and Lee Aaron got their start here in the early 80's. After 35 years, he had had enough. He loved live bands, but people weren't buying enough booze. We have very strict liquor laws so they would nurse their one drink for 3 hours. This made paying for live music untenable. We would get paid $400 for a one night gig. I never played for less than $100 per person, and never got more than that either. The guy who bought the rusty gull in 2018 didn't even bother to bring live music back. He was an accountant and told me it was not profitable. This was one of the last cozy corner pubs, with people of all ages. Audiences could get real close to the stage and always got into it. I filmed every show I did there.
I would always get the Friday/Saturday night slots with my bands, and I was here with many bands, different singers. This was one of my favorite lineups. I think we were called 'Rubberband'. Natalie on vocals (an actual doctor), Bruno on bass, and can't remember the drummer's name. All I remember is that he was odd. He had a very small kit with just a snare drum, and made a lot of entertaining faces. We had a run of hot gigs and then he moved to Toronto and the band was no more. Momentum dropped and I was tired of doing all the work in finding gigs. (Part of the reason I gave up bands later on.) It was a shame as we were gelling well and had some hot shows. (More clips later.) I moved on to instrumental trio work with 'The Singer's on Tour'. (more of that later.)
This is our jam take of Pusherman. I like this one because it's total improvisation with a lot of space for dynamics. Peaks and valleys. Everyone is listening to each other and working off the feedback. Natalie was one of my favorite singers, (and I had a lot of singers), because she was fearless and would sing anything from heavy metal to funk to blues and soul. She learned sets fast and was never a diva. It's very rare to find someone open to that many styles. We actually had a good review in the local paper from an esteemed long time music critic who compared us favorably to 70's group, Babe Ruth.
