Jonatha Brooke - Sally (from the Live from New York DVD)

RehearsalLiveyoutube

I just revisited the “Live in New York” DVD and had completely forgotten about this version of “Sally” with AnnMarie Milazzo. Annie came into rehearsal one day with the clarinet. I had no idea that it was one more thing that she (exquisite, most talented creature) could do. We created this little duet. Especially now, it’s so poignant – both of us having taken the childless path. Writing “another ten songs,” married to the Muse…. Now where did I put that green skirt? xo, JB #jonathabrooke #annmariemilazzo #livefromnewyorkdvd

About This Footage

The rehearsal footage of Jonatha Brooke's "Sally" is a rare gem, offering a glimpse into the creative process of one of America's most underrated singer-songwriters. Filmed during the live recording sessions for her 2001 DVD "Live from New York," this clip showcases Brooke's ability to craft poignant lyrics and complex harmonies in an intimate setting.

At the time of filming, Jonatha Brooke was already a seasoned performer, having been active in the music scene since the late 1980s. Her unique blend of folk, rock, and pop had garnered her a loyal following, but it wasn't until this period that she began to gain wider recognition for her work. The "Live from New York" DVD, which features performances of songs like "Sally," "Song for Adam," and "You're Not Alone," captures Brooke's ability to convey emotional depth through her music.

What makes this clip particularly notable is the inclusion of AnnMarie Milazzo on clarinet. Milazzo, a talented multi-instrumentalist, brings a new dimension to Brooke's songwriting, adding a layer of complexity that elevates the performance. The chemistry between the two artists is palpable, and their spontaneous collaboration results in a beautiful duet.

The YouTube description, penned by Brooke herself, provides context for the clip and offers a glimpse into her creative process. Her candid remarks about the song's significance, written over a decade after its release, demonstrate the enduring power of "Sally." The fact that both artists have chosen to remain childless is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in pursuit of their art.

Viewers will be struck by the intimacy and vulnerability of this performance. Brooke's lyrics, which explore themes of love, loss, and identity, are delivered with a raw emotion that is both captivating and heart-wrenching. The inclusion of Milazzo on clarinet adds a new texture to the song, creating a sense of depth and dimensionality.

One of the most striking aspects of this clip is its rarity. Few rehearsal sessions have been captured on film, let alone released publicly. This footage offers a unique glimpse into the creative process, allowing viewers to witness the evolution of Brooke's songs in real-time. The fact that it was captured during a live recording session adds an extra layer of significance, highlighting the importance of spontaneity and collaboration in the creative process.

As a viewer watches this clip, they will be struck by the beauty of Jonatha Brooke's songwriting and the chemistry between her and AnnMarie Milazzo. The performance is a testament to the power of music to capture emotion and convey meaning. Even years after its release, "Sally" remains a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in pursuit of art, and the enduring legacy of one of America's most talented singer-songwriters.

The image that lingers long after watching this clip is Brooke's voice, soaring on the chorus as Milazzo's clarinet weaves in and out of the melody. It is an unforgettable moment, one that showcases the beauty of collaboration and the creative process.
