The Meters are an influential American funk band that originated in New Orleans in 1965. Known for their tight rhythm section and groove-heavy sound, they played a pivotal role in the development of funk music. The group was initially formed by guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr., drummer Ziggy Modeliste, and keyboardist Art Neville. They first gained recognition as a backing band for artists like Lee Dorsey and Professor Longhair before establishing their own identity. The Meters' sound is characterized by infectious grooves, syncopated rhythms, and a blend of jazz, R&B, and soul influences.
