The Ataris Interview: Mike Davenport on New Music & His Memoir | Warped Tour Mexico
The Ataris Mike Davenport reunites with Music Coast’s Shay Crawford at Vans Warped Tour in Mexico City to discuss the upcoming album Revolution Summer, “Car Song,” and his forthcoming memoir, The Hero Dies in This One. Following our previous conversation at Riot Fest, Mike catches us up on nonstop touring and the personal stories shaping his next chapter. He explains how The Ataris are reconnecting with the spirit of So Long, Astoria while embracing new influences—and why recording to analog tape remains important to their sound. The conversation also gets personal as Mike remembers his father, reflects on writing about his life, and shares how studying positive psychology changed his outlook on touring and relationships. We discuss his memories of Kris Roe’s father, Bill, and the meaning behind the special “Car Song” vinyl tribute. In this interview: • Revolution Summer and what comes next for The Ataris • “Car Song,” musical growth, and the connection to So Long, Astoria • Recording to analog tape and capturing a warmer sound • The story behind The Hero Dies in This One • Family, loss, writing, and positive psychology • Kevin Lyman, Warped Tour memories, and the band’s connection with Mexican fans • Mike’s hopes of seeing his story adapted for the screen What would you ask Mike the next time we sit down together?
