Mounties is a Canadian "supergroup" (in a quaint, Canadian sort of way) consisting of Hawksley Workman, Ryan Dahle (of Limblifter), and Steve Bays (of Hot Hot Heat). After releasing the single and accompanying video "Headphones" in January 2013 -- announcing the track and the existence of the band itself via an out-of-nowhere tweet from Hawksley -- the band eventually released their debut LP, Thrash Rock Legacy, in March 2014. The release -- an album filled with straight-ahead rock tunes which somehow still manage to weave in different musical directions throughout -- coincided with a national tour, including a memorable stop at JunoFest 2014 in Winnipeg. This fall, they crossed Canada once again, and once again visited our home base of Winnipeg as support for Phantogram. I got the chance to speak with Hawksley, Ryan, and Steve on their (very lavish) tour bus prior to their set at Winnipeg's Garrick Theatre. It was one of the most decadent interviews in our 13-year history, including a roaring (video) fire and complementary oranges. With almost half an hour to speak to the three main Mounties men (the trio is joined for their high-energy live shows by Parker Bossley and Cary Pratt), we were able to cover a lot: we spoke about the formation of the band, the type of music being put out into the world these days, how much fun the guys are having touring together, and much more. Even with 30 minutes of chatting, we could have gone on much longer. So Steve put the challenge out to call this part one of our interview series with Mounties. Thus, the next time the band stops in Winnipeg, we'll continue our discussion on the world of music, each of the extremely talented members' careers outside of Mounties, and where the band is headed in the future. This 26:47 clip is a rare gem for fans of Canadian rock music, offering an intimate glimpse into the lives and thoughts of three notable musicians. The footage, shot in 2013, features an in-depth conversation between Hawksley Workman, Ryan Dahle (of Limblifter), and Steve Bays (of Hot Hot Heat) on their tour bus prior to a live performance at Winnipeg's Garrick Theatre.
What makes this clip particularly interesting is the candid nature of the interview. With almost half an hour to speak with the trio, the conversation covers a wide range of topics, from the formation of Mounties as a band to their experiences touring together and the type of music they're creating. The relaxed atmosphere on the tour bus, complete with a roaring fire and complementary oranges, lends itself well to open and honest discussion.
The fact that this interview was conducted in 2013, during Mounties' national tour supporting their debut LP Thrash Rock Legacy, provides valuable context for understanding the band's creative process and artistic vision. The album, released in March 2014, marked a significant milestone for the trio, showcasing their ability to craft high-energy rock tunes that blend different musical directions.
One of the most notable aspects of this clip is the insight it offers into the personalities and dynamics of Hawksley Workman, Ryan Dahle, and Steve Bays. The camaraderie and chemistry between them are palpable, making for an engaging and entertaining watch. Fans of Canadian rock music will appreciate the opportunity to see these three talented musicians in a more relaxed setting, discussing their craft and experiences.
The clip's rarity is also worth noting. With only 30 minutes of conversation, it's clear that this was just the beginning of a longer interview series with Mounties. Unfortunately, it appears that no further parts were released, making this footage all the more precious for those interested in learning more about the band and their creative process.
In terms of historical significance, this clip provides a snapshot of Canadian rock music in 2013, a time when alternative rock was experiencing a resurgence in popularity. The conversation touches on themes relevant to the era, such as the changing landscape of the music industry and the challenges faced by artists seeking to make a name for themselves.
Overall, this 26:47 clip is a must-watch for fans of Canadian rock music and anyone interested in the creative process behind some of the country's most talented musicians. The candid conversation, relaxed atmosphere, and historical significance all contribute to its value as a rare and interesting piece of footage.
