Melvins are an American rock band formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington. Their early work was key to the development of both grunge and sludge metal. Primarily a trio, they have also performed as a quartet, with either two drummers or two bassists. Since 1984, vocalist and guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover have been constant members.
More about Melvins→Added
The Melvins' 1997 LP "Honky" is a behemoth of an album, a sprawling, avant-garde masterpiece that defies easy categorization. And this behind-the-scenes footage, captured in the midst of its creation, offers a rare glimpse into the band's creative process.
At the time of filming, the Melvins were on the cusp of a major label deal with Atlantic Records, and their touring schedule was grueling. They had just released "Houdini" in 1999, but before that, they were still riding high on the success of "Dale Crover's solo album", and this footage captures them in the midst of a creative frenzy.
The clip begins with an introduction to the band's situation: they're signed to Atlantic Records, touring extensively, and working with Tom Hazelmyer on the artwork for "Honky". Joe Barresi, who would later go on to engineer and mix albums for Tool and Alice in Chains, is back behind the board. The atmosphere is one of intense focus, as the band members discuss their creative vision and work through the album's complex arrangements.
One of the standout tracks featured in this footage is "They Must Be Slaughtered", a haunting, sci-fi-tinged epic that showcases the band's ability to craft atmospheric soundscapes. The track features guest vocals from Cat Bjelland (Babes in Toyland), who brings an otherworldly quality to the proceedings. Guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover trade licks and rhythmic ideas, while Mark Deutrom (who also appears on screen) provides a subtle yet effective bass line.
The footage is notable not only for its behind-the-scenes look at the Melvins' creative process but also for its rarity. This is one of the few times that we've seen the band in this type of setting, and it's clear that they're pushing the boundaries of what's possible within a traditional rock framework.
One of the most striking aspects of this footage is the way it captures the band's collaborative spirit. From Osborne's distinctive vocal delivery to Crover's inventive drumming, each member brings their unique perspective to the table. The result is an album that's both cohesive and diverse, a true reflection of the Melvins' innovative approach.
Throughout "Honky", the band explores themes of science fiction, horror, and social commentary, often blurring the lines between genres and styles. This footage offers a glimpse into their thought process as they navigate these complex ideas, and it's clear that they're driven by a desire to push the limits of what's possible.
The Melvins have always been a band ahead of their time, and "Honky" is no exception. This behind-the-scenes footage serves as a reminder of their innovative spirit and creative vision, and it's a must-watch for anyone interested in the band or the music they've made.
As we watch this footage, we're reminded that even the most iconic bands are capable of growth and evolution. The Melvins have always been willing to take risks and push boundaries, and "Honky" is a testament to their willingness to experiment and explore new sounds.
The clip ends with Mark Deutrom's artwork being featured on screen, including his original drawing seen in the video (now sold, but more available at the links provided). This adds an extra layer of depth to the footage, highlighting the band's commitment to visual artistry as much as sonic experimentation.
