R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. R.E.M. was noted for Buck's arpeggiated "jangle" guitar playing; Stipe's distinctive vocal style, unique stage presence, and cryptic lyrics; Mills's countermelodic bass lines and backing vocals; and Berry's tight, economical drumming. In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts suc...

0:20The footage of R.E.M.'s 2016 tour in Europe is a jarring juxtaposition to the current state of the music industry. At the time, the band was still active and touring, despite having been together for over three decades. This clip, shot during their Black Line UK/EUROPE TOUR 2016, captures the energy and intensity that defined R.E.M.'s live performances.
R.E.M. had always been a band ahead of its time, pushing the boundaries of alternative rock with their unique sound. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980 by Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe, they were known for Buck's distinctive guitar playing, Stipe's enigmatic stage presence, and Mills's inventive bass lines. By the time this footage was shot, R.E.M. had already released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Murmur," "Reckoning," and "Document."
What makes this clip rare is that it captures a moment in time when R.E.M. was still touring and performing at the height of their popularity. The band's music was a staple of alternative rock, influencing generations of musicians to come. This footage serves as a reminder of the band's enduring impact on the music industry.
The contrast between this footage and the current state of live performances is striking. With the rise of streaming services and social media, live concerts have become more commercialized than ever before. The intimacy and raw energy of R.E.M.'s performances are a far cry from the slick, overproduced shows that dominate the music scene today.
Watching this clip, one can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the era when rock music was still raw and unbridled. R.E.M.'s music was never about commercial success or mainstream appeal; it was about pushing the boundaries of what was possible with sound and creating something truly original.
The fact that this footage is from 2016, just a few years before R.E.M.'s eventual breakup in 2011, makes it all the more poignant. It serves as a reminder of the band's enduring legacy and the impact they had on the music industry. Even though the band may be gone, their influence lives on through the countless musicians who have been inspired by their unique sound.
This clip is not just a nostalgic look back at R.E.M.'s heyday; it's also a testament to the power of live music to transcend time and trends. In an era where streaming services dominate the music landscape, this footage serves as a reminder of the importance of experiencing music in its rawest form – live and unbridled.
The image that stays with you after watching this clip is of Michael Stipe's enigmatic stage presence, his eyes closed as he pours his heart out to the audience. It's a moment that captures the essence of R.E.M.'s music – raw, emotional, and deeply human.
