When First I Came to Caledonia (backstage with Martin Carthy)
I learnt this song in 1999 from a Waterson:Carthy CD. Norma Waterson sang it, but on my tour with Martin Carthy he told me he gave it to her, having learnt it himself, because he knew she'd sing it so wonderfully (he was right - it's a gorgeous song). He also said that it's the only traditional song that he believes to be perfect. Here we are just revelling in it, backstage at Pocklington Arts Centre, October 21st, 2023. What a treat. The video was filmed by my wife, Emi, on her mobile phone.
