In the 1920s, jazz composer, pianist, and band leader Duke Ellington often recorded his own works multiple times to profit from royalty money, while skirting around a strict contract. Duke would go with his band to other recording studios and make versions of his songs under names such as The Washingtonians, The Chicago Foot Warmers, and more! Some classic Ellington jazz titles that were recorded multiple times in this way include "East St. Loius Toodle-O" and "Black Beauty".
