ST Principal Cellist Andras Weber an Epigram by Zoltán Kodály Our musicians are staying in and staying creative. Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) composed nine Epigrams (Epigrammák) in 1954 along with several other educational works designed to exemplify his method of musical education. They were originally conceived as vocalises, wordless vocal parts with piano accompaniment, but the voice part can be adapted to almost any instrument. These short pieces, grave, gay or lyrical, include subtle polyphonic imitations between the melody and the accompaniment, and their Hungarian character is so integral to Kodály’s style that they radiate a rare serenity of spirit and delight in music-making.
