📌 1962 – Cherilyn Sarkisian, a 16-year-old high school dropout, meets performer and producer Salvatore "Sonny" Bono. Their meeting in a Los Angeles coffee shop marks the beginning of a personal and professional relationship that will soon launch her into stardom. 📌 1963 – Working under the guidance of producer Phil Spector, Cher provides backing vocals on several of his memorable "Wall of Sound" productions. Among these are the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and the Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron," giving her an early taste of studio work and the music industry. 📌 1964 – Cher and Sonny Bono form the duo Caesar and Cleo. They release their debut single, "The Letter," along with "Do You Wanna Dance?" and "Love Is Strange." While these initial releases do not achieve significant chart success, they lay the groundwork for their future as a musical duo. Later in the year, they officially marry. 📌 1965 – The duo rebrands as Sonny & Cher and releases their breakthrough single, "I Got You Babe." The song becomes a massive transatlantic hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and the UK Singles Chart. The same year, Cher launches her solo career with the album All I Really Want to Do, and its title track, a cover of a Bob Dylan song, becomes a top 20 hit in both the US and the UK. 📌 1966 – Cher's solo success continues with the release of her single "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)." Written by Sonny Bono, the song's dramatic flair and Cher's emotive delivery propel it to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three in the UK. This year also sees the release of Sonny & Cher's second album, The Wondrous World of Sonny & Cher. 📌 1967 – Sonny & Cher release the album In Case You're in Love, which features their enduring hit "The Beat Goes On." The single reaches number six on the Billboard Hot 100. The duo also makes their film debut in the movie Good Times, a project that, while not a box office success, showcases their popular appeal. 📌 1968 – As the folk-rock sound they championed begins to wane in popularity, Sonny & Cher's commercial success starts to decline. In an effort to connect with a new audience, they star in the low-budget film Chastity, written and produced by Sonny. Unfortunately, the film is a commercial failure and leaves the couple in significant debt to the US government. 📌 1969 – On March 4th, Cher gives birth to her first child, Chastity Bono. Professionally, with their music career stalled, Sonny & Cher begin to hone a new nightclub act. This act emphasizes witty, off-the-cuff banter and comedy, a format that would soon become the foundation for their highly successful television variety show in the next decade.
