The 90s defined in one set. Experience the raw, visceral, and infamous performance by Nine Inch Nails from the Woodstock '94 festival, cementing their status as the most dangerous and captivating industrial rock band of their generation. This legendary show, often dubbed "Mudstock," was broadcast live on Pay-Per-View to millions and remains the definitive document of the Self Destruct Tour supporting the iconic album The Downward Spiral. However, backstage footage later revealed the chaotic look was a carefully calculated move to create a dramatic visual statement that perfectly matched the grimy, industrial sound. The Filth: Trent Reznor and the band covered themselves in mud that, as revealed by a photographer present, was tragically mixed with overflow from nearby Porta Potties. Despite the risk, the image of NIN as demonic "mud creatures" cemented their legendary status. Trent's Take: Though the performance was critically acclaimed and earned NIN a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance ("Happiness in Slavery"), Reznor later dismissed it, saying he thought the band played "s****y" due to technical difficulties and his dislike of the corporate festival environment. The Purpose: Reznor was famously cynical about the event, admitting it was done "to offset the cost of the tour," perfectly capturing the anti-establishment mood of 90s alternative rock.
