What happens when David Coverdale steps away from the band that defined his career? After Whitesnake came to an end in 1997, Coverdale found himself at a crossroads. For years, his identity had been inseparable from Whitesnake, but now he had the opportunity to make music entirely on his own terms. The result was Into the Light, his 2000 solo album and one of the most personal and overlooked records of his career. In this episode, I look at the story behind Into the Light: why Coverdale felt the need to rediscover himself, how he assembled a group of musicians including Denny Carmassi, Earl Slick, Doug Bossi, Mike Finnigan and Marco Mendoza, and why the album sounded so different from the massive arena-rock productions of Whitesnake. We'll explore the blues, soul, R&B, acoustic and classic-rock influences that made Into the Light such a unique record, how it performed commercially, and why it never received the attention of Coverdale's biggest Whitesnake albums. Then we'll jump forward to 2024, when Into the Light received a major reassessment through the Into the Light: The Solo Albums collection. With new remixes, remastered original mixes, demos, alternate versions and previously unreleased material, Coverdale's solo albums were given a new place within the Whitesnake story. Finally, we'll follow Coverdale from Into the Light through the Whitesnake reunion, the 25th-anniversary tour, the band's live releases and the beginning of his songwriting partnership with Doug Aldrich. But before we get to Good to Be Bad in 2008, we're taking another trip through the Deep Purple family tree with two albums from the Steve Morse era: Bananas and Rapture of the Deep. So was Into the Light simply a forgotten David Coverdale solo album—or was it the record that helped him find his way back to Whitesnake? Let's take a look.
