This is the Q&A portion of Youtube Presents with Regina Spektor on 5 June 2012 after her performance of songs from her new album, "What We Saw From The Cheap Seats". Alan Light of Rolling Stone Magazine interviewed her. I was hoping to be selected to be in the studio audience, but alas, I lost the pick of the draw. YouTube has not posted this interview on their YouTube Presents website for some uncanny reason (actually I think it's because of one or two expletives she uttered), but I was anxious to watch it. Props to "Reginapolis" for making the clip available to the public which did not get a chance to watch it live during the web broadcast that day (like me). I've put this video on my YouTube page so those who subscribe to it or who just curiously stop in from time to time might get the opportunity to watch it too. She is just a joy to observe and listen to. (Note: I do not own or claim to have commercial rights to the content of this video. It is posted here for entertainment and educational purposes only.)

About This Footage

Regina Spektor's unvarnished wit and irreverent charm are on full display in this Q&A session, captured live in a studio on June 5th, 2012. The Russian-born American singer-songwriter was at the height of her creative powers, having just released "What We Saw From The Cheap Seats", an album that would cement her reputation as one of the most innovative and expressive voices of her generation.

At this point in her career, Spektor had already built a devoted following with her unique blend of poetic lyrics, soaring melodies, and genre-bending eclecticism. Her early work on Sire Records had garnered critical acclaim, but it was her 2004 breakthrough album "Soviet Kitsch" that truly announced her arrival as a major talent. By the time this Q&A session took place, Spektor had established herself as a fearless and uncompromising artist, unafraid to tackle themes of love, politics, and personal identity with unflinching honesty.

What makes this footage so remarkable is its candidness – Spektor's responses are refreshingly unscripted and uninhibited, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process of an artist at the height of her powers. The Q&A session was conducted by Alan Light, then editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone Magazine, who proved to be a skilled interviewer capable of drawing out Spektor's thoughts on everything from her songwriting process to her views on the music industry.

This footage is also notable for its rarity – despite being part of the "YouTube Presents" series, it was never officially posted online. It's likely that this decision was made due to some of the more...colorful language used by Spektor during the Q&A session. Thankfully, a devoted fan has seen fit to share this material with the public, providing an invaluable resource for fans and scholars alike.

Watching this footage is like eavesdropping on a private conversation between two kindred spirits – Spektor's infectious enthusiasm and Light's probing questions combine to create a sense of intimacy and connection that's all too rare in these kinds of Q&A sessions. As Spektor discusses her songwriting process, her influences, and her views on the music industry, it becomes clear that she's an artist deeply committed to her craft – and unafraid to speak her mind.

One of the most striking aspects of this footage is Spektor's willingness to be vulnerable and self-deprecating. When asked about her songwriting process, she reveals a disarmingly candid approach, admitting to scribbling down lyrics in notebooks and drawing inspiration from everyday life. Her responses are peppered with witty asides and humorous anecdotes, making it clear that this is an artist who's not afraid to poke fun at herself.

As the Q&A session draws to a close, Spektor reflects on her experiences touring and performing live – a subject she approaches with characteristic wit and humor. It's a testament to her generosity of spirit that she's willing to share these insights with fans and fellow artists alike, providing a glimpse into the creative process that's both inspiring and instructive.

In the end, this footage serves as a reminder of Spektor's unique gifts as an artist – her boundless creativity, her willingness to take risks, and her commitment to speaking truth to power. Watching this Q&A session is like experiencing a masterclass in artistic expression, with Spektor serving as both teacher and inspiration. As the footage fades to black, it's clear that Regina Spektor remains one of the most compelling and innovative voices in contemporary music – and this rare glimpse into her creative process only serves to reinforce that notion.
