About This Footage

The grainy, analog aesthetic of 1990s music videos is a nostalgic treat for those who grew up on alternative rock. But few clips from that era have endured as well as Marcy Playground's "Sex & Candy", a raunchy, tongue-in-cheek romp that still holds up today. The band's irreverent style and catchy hooks helped make them one of the most promising acts to emerge in the late 1990s.

At the time, John Wozniak was already making waves as a singer-songwriter, having released his debut solo album in 1994. But it was Marcy Playground that brought him mainstream success, thanks in part to the hit single "Sex & Candy". The song's lyrics, with their frank discussions of sex and relationships, were considered shocking for its time – but Wozniak's deadpan delivery only added to the song's charm.

The official music video for "Sex & Candy" is a rare gem that has been remastered in high definition. Shot on grainy 16mm film, it captures the band's raw energy and charisma as they perform the song live. The clip is notable not just for its nostalgic value, but also for its insight into the band's creative process. Wozniak's witty banter with his bandmates and the video's playful use of humor and irony all contribute to a sense of spontaneity that makes this clip feel truly special.

One of the things that sets "Sex & Candy" apart from other alternative rock hits is its refusal to take itself too seriously. The song's lyrics are laced with clever wordplay and winking references, while the video's use of humor and satire adds an extra layer of depth to the track. It's a testament to Wozniak's skill as a songwriter that he was able to craft a hit single that was both catchy and irreverent.

For fans of 1990s alternative rock, "Sex & Candy" is a must-see clip. But even for those who aren't familiar with the band or the era, this video offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative process of one of the decade's most promising acts. Wozniak's wit and charm are on full display as he navigates the song's catchy hooks and clever lyrics.

The "Sex & Candy" clip is also notable for its historical significance. Released in 1997, it captures a moment in time when alternative rock was still a relatively new force on the mainstream music scene. The band's irreverent style and catchy hooks helped pave the way for future acts like Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

As you watch "Sex & Candy", you can't help but be struck by Wozniak's charisma and stage presence. He's a true original, with a wit and charm that sets him apart from his contemporaries. And while the video itself may seem dated at times, its irreverent style and playful humor have aged remarkably well.

In short, "Sex & Candy" is a rare gem of a clip that offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative process of one of the 1990s' most promising acts. With its witty lyrics, catchy hooks, and irreverent style, it's a must-see for fans of alternative rock – and a testament to Wozniak's enduring talent as a songwriter and performer.
