Backstage Diary | Week 1

Youth
2010s2017BackstageTourBehind the Scenes

Winner of the 2017 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season following sold out seasons at the National Theatre, Edinburgh Festival Fringe and UK tour. From the creator of Billy Elliot (Lee Hall) comes the uplifting and moving story of six Catholic school girls from Oban, let loose in Edinburgh for one day only. Funny, raucous and heartbreaking, Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour is adapted from Alan Warner’s brilliant novel about six young friends on the cusp of change and is directed by Royal Court Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone. Featuring the songs of ELO, Our Ladies is a glorious anthem to friendship, youth and growing up disgracefully.

About This Footage

The unassuming charm of "Backstage Diary | Week 1" lies in its candid portrayal of the inner workings of a theatre production. Filmed in 2017, this rare footage captures the behind-the-scenes chaos of Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour's West End run. The Olivier Award-winning play, adapted from Alan Warner's novel, had already gained momentum with sold-out seasons at the National Theatre and Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

At the time of filming, Lee Hall, the creator of Billy Elliot, was riding high on his reputation as a masterful storyteller. His collaboration with Vicky Featherstone, Royal Court Artistic Director, brought a unique blend of humor and heartache to the stage. The play's use of ELO songs added an extra layer of depth, transforming the narrative into a glorious anthem to friendship, youth, and growing up.

What makes this footage significant is its unvarnished look at the theatre industry. Unlike polished promotional materials or carefully curated social media posts, "Backstage Diary | Week 1" presents an authentic glimpse into the lives of those involved in bringing Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour to life. The camera captures the camaraderie among cast members, the intensity of rehearsals, and the occasional moment of levity.

A viewer watching this footage will be struck by the sense of community that pervades every aspect of the production. From the way the actors interact with each other to the crew's dedication to their craft, it's clear that everyone involved is invested in bringing this story to the stage. The footage also highlights the importance of teamwork and collaboration in creating a successful theatrical experience.

One of the most compelling aspects of "Backstage Diary | Week 1" is its raw, unpolished quality. Unlike more polished behind-the-scenes features, this footage eschews glamour for a more intimate, observational approach. It's as if the camera has been left running, capturing the mundane and the extraordinary with equal ease.

As the cast navigates the challenges of bringing Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour to life, their passion and dedication shine through. The footage is a testament to the power of live theatre to bring people together and create lasting memories. Even in its most mundane moments – a cast member struggling to remember lines or a crew member frantically searching for a misplaced prop – there's a sense of excitement and anticipation that permeates every frame.

Ultimately, "Backstage Diary | Week 1" is a rare gem that offers a unique perspective on the theatre industry. It's a reminder that even in the most high-pressure environments, creativity and camaraderie can thrive. As the cast members laugh, argue, and work together to bring this story to life, it's clear that Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour is more than just a play – it's an experience that will stay with viewers long after the curtain falls.
