About This Footage

Conor Oberst's 2007 performance of "Lime Tree" with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl is a masterclass in restraint and emotional depth.

In 2007, Conor Oberst was riding high on the success of Bright Eyes' album "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning", which had just been released to critical acclaim. The album's introspective lyrics and soaring melodies resonated with fans and critics alike, cementing Oberst's reputation as one of the most talented young singer-songwriters of his generation.

This footage is notable not only for its rarity but also for its significance in showcasing Oberst's ability to craft a live performance that is both intimate and grand. The fact that he is playing "Lime Tree" with the LA Philharmonic, one of the world's most renowned orchestras, adds an extra layer of complexity to the song.

The acoustic guitar and Oberst's haunting vocals are perfectly complemented by the lush strings and woodwinds of the orchestra, creating a sense of space and atmosphere that is both beautiful and unsettling. The performance is a testament to Oberst's skill as a songwriter and performer, able to convey the emotional nuances of his lyrics through a combination of melody, harmony, and arrangement.

What makes this footage truly remarkable is the way it captures the essence of Oberst's live performances at the time. His ability to connect with the audience, to convey the emotions and themes of his songs in a way that is both personal and universal, is on full display here. The fact that he is playing for a crowd of thousands, yet still manages to create an intimate and emotional connection with each individual listener, is a testament to his skill as a performer.

The YouTube description accompanying this footage provides a fascinating glimpse into the context in which it was recorded. The mention of Oberst's performance at the Hollywood Bowl on September 29th, 2007, and the shout-out to Aubrey and Jordan, who are presumably friends or fans, adds a sense of warmth and camaraderie to the performance.

As you watch this footage, you can't help but be struck by the emotional intensity of Oberst's performance. His voice soars and dips with a range and expressiveness that is both breathtaking and heartbreaking. The way he interacts with his backing vocalists, who are equally expressive in their delivery, adds an extra layer of depth to the song.

The final moments of the performance, as captured on camera, are particularly poignant. The look of quiet contemplation on Oberst's face as he finishes singing is a powerful reminder of the emotional resonance of his music. It's a moment that lingers long after the song has ended, leaving the viewer with a sense of awe and appreciation for the artist's skill and craft.

This footage is a rare and precious document of Conor Oberst's live performances at their peak. It captures the essence of his music, which continues to resonate with listeners today. As you watch "Lime Tree" being performed by Bright Eyes with the LA Philharmonic, you are reminded of the enduring power of Oberst's songwriting and the timeless beauty of his music.
