Indie88 Interviews: Sloan

Concert
RareLiveyoutube

Sloan are celebrating their debut record Smeared with two very special shows in Toronto at The Concert Hall. Sloan's Chris Murphy and Patrick Pentland dropped by to chat with Lana and dive into the record that got their start. From the inspirations behind the songs (including Marcus who DID in fact have some lyrics requested for "Marcus Said",) you'll hear about their songs and sounds of the early '90s, and of course, what it's like to get ready to play them all 3+ decades later. If you're lucky there's a few tickets left for you here for the November 29th show at The Concert Hall (November 30th is sold out.)

About This Footage

Sloan's Smeared gets the rare treatment, as Chris Murphy and Patrick Pentland sit down with Lana from Indie88 to dissect their debut record. This 20-minute interview is a treasure trove of insight into the band's early days, and it's a must-watch for anyone who's ever wondered what makes Sloan tick.

It's 2023, but in this clip, we're transported back to the early '90s, when Smeared was first released. At that time, Sloan was still finding its footing as a band, but they were already showing signs of greatness. With songs like "Underwhelmed" and "The Lines You Cross", Smeared set the stage for what would become one of Canada's most beloved bands.

What makes this interview so notable is the level of detail that Chris and Patrick share about their songwriting process. They talk about the inspirations behind some of the album's standout tracks, including the song "Marcus Said", which features lyrics requested by a fan named Marcus. It's moments like these that give us a glimpse into the band's creative process, and it's clear that they were always committed to making music that was authentic and true to themselves.

This interview is also significant because it shows how Sloan has aged remarkably well over the years. Even though it's been three decades since Smeared was released, Chris and Patrick are still enthusiastic about playing these songs live. They talk about getting ready for their upcoming shows at The Concert Hall in Toronto, where they'll be performing Smeared in its entirety. It's a testament to the band's dedication to their craft, and it's clear that they're still passionate about making music.

One of the things that sets this interview apart from others is the relaxed atmosphere between Chris, Patrick, and Lana. They chat like old friends, sharing stories and anecdotes about the album's creation. It's a conversational tone that makes the viewer feel like they're eavesdropping on a private conversation, rather than watching a formal interview.

As you watch this clip, you'll get a sense of what made Smeared such an important record in Sloan's discography. You'll hear about the band's early influences, their songwriting process, and how they've maintained their creative spark over the years. It's a fascinating glimpse into the band's history, and it's clear that Chris and Patrick are still proud of what they accomplished with Smeared.

The interview is also notable for its rarity – footage like this doesn't come along often, especially when it's as in-depth and candid as this one. Sloan has always been a band that values their fans, and this interview is a testament to that commitment. By sharing their story and their music with the world, Chris and Patrick are giving us a glimpse into what makes them tick, and why Smeared remains such an beloved album to this day.

As you watch this clip, pay attention to the way Chris and Patrick talk about their songwriting process. They're not just musicians – they're also storytellers, and they have a gift for weaving tales that transport us back in time. It's a skill that's been honed over years of making music together, and it's clear that they're still passionate about sharing those stories with the world.

In short, this interview is a must-watch for anyone who loves Sloan or is interested in Canadian music history. It's a rare glimpse into the band's early days, and it shows why Smeared remains such an important record to this day. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the conversation – you won't regret it.
