Sometimes you pop the hood and realize the engine is so pristine you don't want to touch a thing. For this "Chassis Only" breakdown, I originally planned to do a stripped rhythm mix. But once I isolated the vocals, I realized that the true power plant of this 1973 masterpiece wasn't the band—it was the voices. I decided to leave this completely "stock." No added effects, no production tricks, just the raw lead vocals and The Pips' legendary harmonies. This mix proves that this song doesn't need drums or bass to drive forward; the vocals have enough torque to carry the whole weight. Listen for: The incredible "call and response" timing between Gladys and The Pips. The raw emotion in the ad-libs that usually gets buried under the horns.
