We were also really questioning how much we wanted to be famous because our first album came out and we were voted the number one record of the year over Michael Jackson's Thriller which is the record that has sold more copies than any other record in the history of recorded music That was our first album I was 23 years old That was kind of a lot to have foisted upon us at that point So when it came time to record Fables I wasn't really sure I wanted to do this I wasn't sure that this was really the direction that I wanted to head in

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia.
