This is a remaster of the 1996 demo tape Kara's Flowers (now Maroon 5) likely recorded by Jesse and Adam on their home 4-track recording machines. After Reprise bought the band out of their record deal with the indie label OMAD, they signed with Rob Cavallo (of Green Day fame) as producer for their 1997 album, "The Fourth World." About half of the tracks included were already written for the OMAD album, but some newer, tamer, and melodic compositions like "My Ocean Blue" were put on it as well. These demos were (supposedly) written around 1996, after “…We Like Digging,” but before The Village recording studio sessions with Rob Cavallo, where all of these songs except “The Current Fantasy” would be recorded as live takes. The picture featured is the band in Cavallo's office in 1996, the day they signed their contract with Reprise/Warner. From crumbs of details shared by Ryan Dusick, (then-drummer) it can be concluded that these songs were written at a similar time period as more Beatles inspired tracks like "Myself," "Oliver," "My Ocean Blue," "To Her, With Love," and b-side/Japanese bonus track, "Buddy 'Two Shoes' Wilson." This tape was (allegedly) leaked on the internet at some point and shared on file sharing websites and programs like Napster and Limewire. The songs were incorrectly named and the date and location of these recordings were unknown for quite some time. In fact, many posts of this tape call it "Room #222 Demos" (which is actually a tape made sometime before The Fourth World) or "Post-We Like Digging Demos." However, Ryan Dusick has responded to comments of old concert footage of the band he posted, and revealed the true names of each song. The tracklist (hopefully in order) is: 1. The Current Fantasy (Previously labeled as "On My Show") 2. Angela 3. My Favorite Belle (Previously labeled as "Dreammaker #222," a different song written in 1996) 4. Neil's True Love (Previously labeled as "Need Some Fun," lyrics by Levine about Neil Armstrong writing a love letter on his trip back from the moon) Dusick also posted the re-recorded version of "The Current Fantasy," an outtake from the studio sessions for "The Fourth World" (which you can find on my channel). This version has a 24-piece orchestra, and is led by piano instead of guitar. However, with the digital fidelity of this track I was able to conclude the original speed of the demo tape by slowing down the early version of "The Current Fantasy" to match the key of the newer version. The result also made Adam's vocals sound way more like he actually does (and less like a chipmunk). With the correct speed, I then ran the tracks through some denoise and enhancement algorithms. After that, I equalized the songs to have more clarity by boosting the higher ends. With all these edits, we now have the most accurate and clear form of this rare demo tape ever! Let me know what you think! Do you like the more melodic and tame sound of these songs? Is it better than Maroon 5? Let me know!
