Part of my musical growth always involves taking a deeper look at the masters of jazz - usually bass players - most often through their compositions. Lately, I’ve been spending a bit of time with the great bassist Oscar Pettiford, who delivered a number of memorable performances on both double bass and cello, as well as a notable body of work as a composer. I firmly believe that a jazz base line exists within a musician’s approach to the blues, so I tend to start there; as I delve into recording some music from Pettiford, that’s where I’m starting with Blues In The Closet. Of course, this is music written decades earlier, so I’ve once again approached the idea of tradition in transition, integrating funky grooves and electronic production. It’s a blending of old and new, as well as a peek at my growing investigation of Oscar Pettiford.
