Albert “Bud” Revis is known as “The George Washington” of SBCC Athletics, and for good reason. Revis not only began the athletics program at SBCC, but he also served as the head coach of many of the sports he founded. At one time, Revis was the head coach of the football, men’s basketball and baseball teams in the same school year. Revis founded and was the head coach of the baseball, football, men’s and women’s basketball and golf team. He also founded the men’s tennis, men’s track and field and cross country teams during his tenure as the school’s Director of Athletics. At the time of his retirement, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table remarked that Revis “saw the program grow from two sports that freelanced to a full sports program that is a power to be reckoned with in their conference.” Revis worked for SBCC from 1951-1976 and in his 25 years, provided the opportunity for hundreds of student-athletes to call themselves Vaqueros. In addition to serving as the Director of Athletics and on top of all his coaching duties, Revis was also the Chairman of the Physical Education Department at SBCC, Chairman of the SBCC Athletics Committee, Commissioner of the South Central Conference, was on the selection committee of the Junior Rose Bowl and the Potato Bowl, served as a lecturer and professor of Physical Education and Health and was on the planning committee of the SBCC Athletics Complex. Revis was inducted into the SBART Hall of Fame in 1978. Widely respected as a caring man who was eager to mentor young coaches, Revis was also a leader in creating opportunities in athletics and outdoor activities for female athletes; something that was rare during the 1940’s and 50’s. A member of the United States Army in 1945 and 1946, Revis was also an Assistant Football Coach at Bonita High School in 1946. SBCC dedicated the 2001 football season to Revis and has named their Athletics Trophy Case in the Sports Pavilion in his honor.
