Expert's take on N. Korea's human rights abuses and global response

UN, 北인권결의안 채택 “백신 협력해야”…韓, 3년째 불참 Now it’s time for On Point, where we speak to experts to delve deeper into the biggest news stories in the spotlight right now. North Korea has again been held to account by the United Nations for its abysmal human rights record. Reports by the United States and other estimate anywhere between 100-thousand to 200-thousand North Koreans are - at this moment - detained as political prisoners inside the regime. Last week, for the 17th year in a row, the UN General Assembly Third Committee adopted a resolution slamming what it described as the North’s “long-standing” and “systematic” violations of human rights. It was adopted by consensus, meaning all member states agreed to the resolution, but no vote was cast. Also, for the third straight year, South Korea did not co-sponsor the report and played no role in drafting it. For more, we connect to Mark Barry, a North Korea expert and the Associate Editor of the International Journal on World Peace. Good morning, Mark. The North’s human right abuses are well-documented. However, given the regime’s secrecy , estimates are likely just scratching the surface. Considering what the world knows, why has South Korea been taking such a hands-off approach for the past three years? As we mentioned, this is the 17th consecutive year such a report has been drafted by the UN. North Korea does its usual verbal protesting, but rarely does anything come of these reports. What significance - if any - do they have? For our international viewers who might not be aware, what kind of human right abuses does the regime engage in? And if you were to line up the world’s worst offenders - China, Syria, failed states in Africa - where would you rank North Korea? Finally, North Korea has - for decades - been getting away with crimes against humanity with little more than a slap on the wrist. In your view, is there a way countries like South Korea, the U.S. or Japan can make a real difference or will day-to-day life for millions of North Koreans continue to be abject misery? Well, as always, we thank you your insights, despite the depressing nature of the topic. That was Mark Barry, Associate Editor of the International Journal of World Peace, on North Korea’s human right abuses and the world’s response to them. #NorthKorea #human_rights #UN_General_Assembly 📣 Arirang News(Facebook) : https://www.facebook.com/arirangtvnews 📣 Arirang News(Twitter) : https://twitter.com/arirangtvnews 📣 News Center(YouTube) : https://www.youtube.com/c/NEWSCENTER_ARIRANGTV 2021-11-23, 08:00 (KST)
