About Moses "Whispering" Smith

1960s-1970s soul artist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Note it is NOT the same artist as the blues harmonicist [a842197] or soul group [a432695]. Moses Smith started singing aged 13. He won a singing contest at The Uptown theatre in Philadelphia and as a result was signed by Gilda Woods (wife of local radio DJ Georgie Woods (the man with the goods) on WHAT-AM & WDAS) to her fledgling Dionn label. He released his first record on Dionn in 1968 and another on Cotillion in 1970. Both records are in demand on UK Northern Soul scene. In 2002 another, previously unreleased track, 'Try My Love' (apparently recorded at the same session as 'The Girl Across The Street') was issued on 'The Northern Side Of Philly Soul' compilation CD on Jamie. The compilation also contained an instrumental version of the track. Try My Love was also released on 7" vinyl in 2002 with 'The Girl Across The Street' on the flip. Little else is known about the singer.
