About Ian Gillan

Ian Gillan (born 19 August 1945) is an English singer who is best known as the lead singer and lyricist for the rock band Deep Purple. He is known for his powerful and wide-ranging singing voice. Initially influenced by Elvis Presley, Gillan started and fronted several local bands in the mid-1960s, and eventually joined Episode Six when their original singer left. He first found widespread commercial success after joining Deep Purple in 1969. He resigned from the band in June 1973, having given a lengthy notice period to their managers. After a short time away from the music business, he resumed his music career with solo bands the Ian Gillan Band and Gillan, before a year-long stint as the vocalist for Black Sabbath in 1983. The following year, Deep Purple reformed and two more successful albums followed before he left in 1989. He returned to the group in 1992, and has remained its lead singer ever since. In addition to his main work—performing with Deep Purple and other bands during the 1970s and 1980s—he sang the role of Jesus in the original recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), performed in the charity supergroup Rock Aid Armenia, and engaged

Ian Gillan — Rare Footage & Clips

Ian Gillan's storied career has left an indelible mark on the world of rock music. As one of the most iconic vocalists in history, his powerful voice has been a constant presence for over five decades. From his early days as the lead singer of Deep Purple to his subsequent solo endeavors and collaborations with other legendary bands, Gillan's impact on the genre cannot be overstated.

One of the earliest signs of Gillan's musical prowess was his stint with Episode Six in the mid-1960s. Although the band's original singer left, it allowed Gillan to take center stage, showcasing his vocal range and charisma. This experience would prove invaluable when he eventually joined Deep Purple in 1969. As one can see from various clips on our archive, Gillan's tenure with Deep Purple was marked by immense commercial success and critical acclaim. Classics like "Smoke on the Water" and "Child in Time" continue to be staples of rock music.

However, it is worth noting that Gillan's time with Deep Purple was not without its challenges. His departure from the band in 1973, although amicable, marked a significant turning point in his career. The lengthy notice period he gave to their managers suggests a level of professionalism and respect for the institution that would serve him well in the years to come.

After leaving Deep Purple, Gillan took time away from the music business before resuming his solo work with the Ian Gillan Band and Gillan. These endeavors allowed him to explore new sounds and styles, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and dedicated artist. The 1983 stint with Black Sabbath is also noteworthy, demonstrating his willingness to collaborate with other legendary bands.

The subsequent reformation of Deep Purple in the mid-1980s marked a triumphant return for Gillan. With albums like "Perfect Strangers" (1984) and "The House of Blue Light" (1987), he proved that his voice remained as powerful as ever, capable of conveying the emotional intensity required by the band's iconic songs.

Gillan's work on Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is also significant. His portrayal of Jesus in the original recording (1970) showcased his vocal range and dramatic flair, further solidifying his reputation as a master vocalist. This collaboration highlights Gillan's willingness to explore different genres and push beyond traditional rock boundaries.

One notable aspect of Gillan's career is his ability to balance commercial success with artistic integrity. His solo work, such as the 1986 album What I Did on My Vacation, demonstrated a level of experimentation and risk-taking that was not always rewarded commercially. However, albums like Naked Thunder (1990) and Toolbox (1991) showcased his continued commitment to exploring new sounds and themes.

In addition to his music, Gillan has been involved in various charitable endeavors throughout the years. His participation in Rock Aid Armenia is a testament to his dedication to using his platform for good. This supergroup brought together some of the biggest names in rock to raise funds for the victims of the 1988 Spitak earthquake.

Gillan's continued association with Deep Purple, which began anew in 1992, has provided a sense of stability and continuity throughout his career. His leadership and vocal prowess have been instrumental in guiding the band through various lineup changes and creative periods. The fact that he remains the group's lead singer to this day is a testament to his enduring talent and dedication.

The 2002 album The Purple People Eater, as well as Mercury High: The Story of Ian Gillan (2004), offer a glimpse into Gillan's later work with Deep Purple. These albums demonstrate an ongoing commitment to exploring new sounds and themes while maintaining the band's signature style.

Throughout his career, Gillan has been praised for his powerful voice, but it is worth noting that his impact extends far beyond his vocal abilities. His songwriting skills, as evident in classics like "Smoke on the Water," have left a lasting legacy on rock music. Moreover, his willingness to collaborate with other artists and explore different genres has made him an invaluable asset to the musical community.

In conclusion, Ian Gillan's storied career is a testament to his enduring talent and dedication to his craft. From his early days as the lead singer of Deep Purple to his subsequent solo endeavors and collaborations with other legendary bands, he has left an indelible mark on rock music.
