About Art Garfunkel

Arthur Ira Garfunkel (born November 5, 1941) is an American singer, actor and poet who is best known for his partnership with Paul Simon in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. Born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, Garfunkel became acquainted with Simon through an elementary school play, a production of Alice in Wonderland. Their combined presence in music began in the 1950s, and throughout the 1960s the duo of Simon & Garfunkel achieved great chart success with tracks such as "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson" (written for the 1967 film The Graduate), "Scarborough Fair", "The Boxer" and "Bridge over Troubled Water". The last song's title also served as the name of Simon & Garfunkel's final album in 1970. Simon & Garfunkel split for personal reasons, but the pair have occasionally reunited in the years since. Both men, in particular Paul Simon, experienced success in solo careers in the years following the duo's breakup. Highlights of Garfunkel's solo music career in the US include one top 10 hit, three top 20 hits, six top 40 hits, 14 Adult Contemporary top 30 singles and five Adult Contemporary number ones. He also scored two UK number ones and a People's Choice Award.

A Voice of Enduring Timelessness: The Art Garfunkel Story

In the vast expanse of music history, few voices have managed to transcend time and trends with such effortless ease as that of Art Garfunkel. As one half of the iconic folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, he helped shape the sound of a generation, crafting songs that continue to resonate deeply with listeners today. But beyond his partnership with Paul Simon, Garfunkel's solo career has been marked by an unwavering commitment to artistic expression, yielding a body of work that remains as vital and relevant now as it was upon its initial release.

One need look no further than the archives of DeepCutsArchive for testament to this enduring legacy. The clip "The Sound of Silence" (1965), taken from Simon & Garfunkel's debut album, is a masterclass in vocal restraint and emotional intensity. Here, Garfunkel's voice soars on the song's haunting refrain, imbuing the lyrics with a sense of longing that has become one of the defining characteristics of his artistry.

Of course, "The Sound of Silence" was just the beginning for Simon & Garfunkel. As their partnership continued to flourish throughout the 1960s, they produced some of the most beloved and enduring songs in American popular music. Tracks like "Mrs. Robinson," "Scarborough Fair," "The Boxer," and "Bridge over Troubled Water" have become ingrained in our collective consciousness, their themes of love, loss, and social commentary continuing to resonate with listeners today.

But what's often overlooked is the significance of these songs within the broader context of music history. "Mrs. Robinson," for example, was a key component of The Graduate soundtrack, helping to cement Simon & Garfunkel's status as one of the most sought-after songwriting teams of their generation. And yet, it's also a testament to the duo's ability to craft songs that transcended their original context, becoming timeless classics in their own right.

As we delve into Art Garfunkel's solo career, it becomes clear that his commitment to artistic expression never wavered. Albums like Angel Clare (1973), Breakaway (1975), and Watermark (1978) showcase a singer-songwriter intent on pushing the boundaries of what was possible in popular music. And while he may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as Simon & Garfunkel, his solo work has been marked by an unwavering dedication to craft.

One highlight of this period is the clip "All I Know" (1973), taken from Angel Clare. Here, Garfunkel's voice soars on a sweeping ballad that showcases his remarkable vocal range and emotional depth. It's a powerful reminder of his ability to craft songs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Of course, no discussion of Art Garfunkel's career would be complete without acknowledging the impact of his partnership with Paul Simon. While their breakup in 1970 marked the end of an era for fans of folk-rock music, it also paved the way for two incredibly successful solo careers. And while Simon & Garfunkel may have reunited on occasion since their initial split, it's clear that both men have continued to thrive as individual artists.

As we explore Art Garfunkel's solo discography in greater depth, it becomes clear that his commitment to artistic expression has remained unwavering throughout the years. From the Adult Contemporary hits of the 1970s and 1980s to the critically-acclaimed albums of the 1990s, he has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible in popular music.
