Alex Clare — Rare Footage & Clips

London's streets were alive with the sounds of Alex Clare's soulful voice in the summer of 2011. His debut album, The Lateness of the Hour, had just dropped like a sonic bombshell, shattering the city's musical complacency with its genre-bending fusion of indie rock and electronic dance music.

Clare's breakthrough single "Too Close" was more than just a catchy tune; it was a harbinger of things to come. The song's infectious beat and haunting vocal hooks captured the hearts of listeners worldwide, propelling Clare to international stardom. In the DeepCutsArchive, we have an exclusive clip of Clare performing "Too Close" live at the iconic O2 Arena in London, where he brings the house down with his raw energy and emotional delivery.

The Lateness of the Hour was more than just a debut album; it was a game-changer. Produced by Mike Spencer and Major Lazer, the album's eclectic soundscapes and thought-provoking lyrics pushed the boundaries of what was possible in popular music at the time. The album's lead single "Too Close" peaked at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100, cementing Clare's status as a rising star.

But Alex Clare is more than just a one-hit wonder or a flash-in-the-pan sensation. His music has a depth, complexity, and emotional resonance that sets him apart from his peers. With each subsequent album, he has continued to evolve and refine his sound, experimenting with new styles and themes while maintaining an unwavering commitment to artistic integrity.

Take, for example, Three Hearts (2014), which saw Clare exploring the darker corners of human experience through a rich tapestry of atmospheric electronica and haunting vocal melodies. The album's lead single "Treading Water" is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of love, loss, and redemption that showcases Clare's remarkable vocal range and emotional vulnerability.

Or consider Tail of Lions (2016), which marked a bold new direction for Clare as he incorporated elements of hip-hop and R&B into his sound. The album's lead single "Grow Old with Me" is a poignant ballad that showcases Clare's ability to craft soaring, anthemic choruses that linger long after the music has faded.

But Alex Clare's significance in music history goes beyond his individual albums or singles. He represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of popular music, a time when genres were blurring and boundaries were being pushed. His influence can be heard in the work of subsequent artists who have followed in his footsteps, from Hozier to James Bay.

And yet, despite his many achievements, Clare remains an underrated artist, often overlooked in favor of more commercially successful or trendy acts. But for those who have followed his career with any degree of attention, it is clear that he has always been a trailblazer, a true original who refuses to be pigeonholed or constrained by genre or expectation.

As we look back on Clare's remarkable journey so far, it is impossible not to feel a sense of awe and admiration for an artist who has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in popular music. His commitment to his art, his willingness to take risks and experiment with new sounds and styles, has resulted in some truly unforgettable moments that will be remembered for years to come.

And yet, even as we celebrate Clare's many achievements, it is clear that he remains a work in progress, an artist who continues to evolve and grow with each new release. His latest album, Rebuild Again (2024), marks a bold new direction for Clare, one that sees him incorporating elements of electronic dance music into his sound while maintaining an unwavering commitment to emotional honesty and vulnerability.

As we delve deeper into Alex Clare's remarkable discography, it becomes clear that he is more than just a talented singer-songwriter – he is a true original, a visionary who has left an indelible mark on the musical landscape. His music may not be for everyone, but for those who have been lucky enough to experience it, it is a gift that will stay with them forever.
