Died August 25, 2001 in Marsh Harbour, Abaco Islands, The Bahamas (Aged 22) in an Airplane crash that also claimed the lives of 8 others after filming the music video for her single "Rock The Boat". Daughter of [a1772573], sister of [a666565]. Niece of Record Executive [a348491] and (by marriage) Soul legend [a135244]. Cousin of record executive [a171166] and rapper [a803218]. Married to controversial R&B Singer/Producer [a14646] from 1994-1995 (annulled). At time of passing, in a relationship with (and had reportedly planned to marry) Hip-hop mogul [a174951]. Upon releasing her debut album "[m=100995]" in 1994, Aaliyah gained a steadily growing reputation for helping to redefine contemporary R&B, pop and hip hop, earning her the nicknames the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban pop". A sophomore album "[m=101004]" was released in 1996, and her final album, "[m=35220]", appeared earlier in the year of her tragic death. To Date, Aaliyah's music has continued to achieve commercial success, as she has sold an estimated 24 to 32 million copies of her discography worldwide.
